| Restoration Hardware This is Subway Art for those of you who have never seen it. I am in LOVE. These can be found here for a whopping $795.. each! I have been lusting over them for so long that I finally decided to take a stab at making my own! Not only is it an affordable and easy option; but you can personalize them as well. My boyfriend has a serious obsession with anything Boston (the Red Sox in particular) and I am a New York fan so I decided to make 2 for the dining room. One is all of the streets surrounding Fenway Park in Boston. And the second are the major Fashion streets/areas in NYC. As I said before this is super easy! I made the signs in PowerPoint to start (any editing program will work as well). Just make the background black and choose whatever font you wish. Make sure they are the size of your canvas. I went to A.C. Moore and bought 2-18x24 canvases that just so happened to be on sale for $5! I picked up some Mod Podge at A.C. Moore as well for $6. And printed the Powerpoint slides at Staples. These were about $2 to print. I just had them blow the images up to the size of my canvas on regular black and white paper. This is what it looked like:  Once you have all your materials it's easy as pie! Put Mod Podge on the back of the paper and stick it onto the canvas. Then Mod Podge the entire front. It will be white at first and possibly wrinkly like this:  But don't worry it dries clear and the wrinkles will come out! Make sure you wait 20 minutes in between coats; I did 3 coats. This was the outcome:    It's not perfect but it was also only about $10 a piece! The good thing about DIY projects are that if you mess up you can always try again because the materials are CHEAP :) What do you think? xo Rebecca |

This diy project seems simple enough. How much time did you spend on the project (start to finish)?
And what do you think about using aluminum sheeting as the backing?
Hi JMP! I agree I do LOVE those signs; great for a smaller space. I honestly did these one day on my lunch break. I probably put an hour into the project. I'm not so sure how aluminum would turn out; the reason I chose canvas is because it has some texture to it that shows through once you mod podge the paper to it. I have seen it done with wood though and it looked great!
